Miss Double D'Oro wins Wine Country Stakes at Sonoma County Fair

After combining to win Saturday's $53,370 Wine Country Stakes with Miss Double D'Oro, local jockey Silvio Amador and Hall of Fame trainer Neil Drysdale will try to sweep the weekend feature races at the Sonoma County Fair with Aguafria in Sunday's Luther Burbank Handicap.

Miss Double D'Oro rallied from last place to win and Aguafria has a similar style of running. In her last start, April 3 at Santa Anita, she was last early and made a late charge to finish second.

Amador is hoping Aguafria has as much as acceleration as Miss Double D'Oro.

In the Wine Country, he was amazed by the filly's turn of foot once he steered her in the clear.

'She just ran away from me,' the native of Mexico said with a smile. 'She's awesome.'

Miss Double D'Oro was five wide on the second turn and won the race by 1½ lengths. She paid her backers $5 to win and her connections collected $32,950.

Miss Boom Boom finished second and Miss Centerfold checked in third.

Amador inherited the mount on Miss Double D'Oro when Del Mar-based rider Alonso Quinonez decided not to come north.

NOTES

After three days of racing, the biggest surprise is that Russell Baze hasn't ridden a winner. He'll have six chances Sunday and will be aboard topweight Central Heat in the $50,000 Burbank.

Locally-based trainer Steve Specht saddled his third winner of the meet Saturday when Anoited Waters took the fifth race.

Announcer Michael Wrona will be the guest today at the handicapping seminar beginning at 11:30 a.m. behind the grandstand.
