NBL, SCL football roundup: Cardinal Newman TD kick-starts 62-19 rout of Del Norte

Cardinal Newman's Damian Wallace set the tone for the game by returning the opening kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown and the Cardinals went on to defeat Del Norte, 62-19, Friday night in Crescent City.

Wallace wound up scoring four touchdowns in the first half.

The Cardinals led 28-6 after one quarter and increased the advantage to 55-19 by halftime.

Quarterback Jordon Brookshire also had a big opening night as he threw for three touchdowns in the first half.

Michael Ortola was the game's leading rusher with 103 yards, all in the first half.

Ortola was also a key player on defense. Playing outside linebacker, the senior made five tackles and recovered a fumble.

Jordan Cabico also had five tackles.

After racing to a large lead, the Newman offense went conservative in the second half. The only touchdown after intermission came on a 5-yard run by Ian McMullen.

Newman's home opener is next Friday against St. Mary's of Stockton.

Fremont 24, Sonoma Valley 0

At Sonoma Valley, the visitors from Oakland scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters.

The first score came on a kickoff return and that turned out to be the only score the Tigers would need.

'We weren't in condition to play,' coach Bob Midgeley said. 'We need to get tougher mentally and physically. We got pretty tired.'

The Dragons' defense, led by Max Houghton and John Little, allowed only one touchdown.

Quarterback Max Yankovich had a good game rushing, but Sonoma was unable to cross the Fremont goal line.

The Dragons will play at Berkeley next Friday night.

Willits 28, El Molino 6

At Windsor, the Wolverines' rushing game wore down the undermanned Lions.

El Molino dressed only 15 players.

Joshua Wright provided a majority of the highlights for the Lions. He rushed for 127 yards on 13 carries.

The score was 22-0 when El Molino got on the board in the third quarter. Quarterback Avery Ransom connected with Ryan Fernandez for the 22-yard score.

'We're thin on numbers and it showed,' coach Randy Parmeter said. 'Willits pounded the football on us and most of the time we couldn't stop them.'
