Analy quarterback Jack Newman threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth, having a hand in all four Tigers scores Friday in a 27-14 victory against host Maria Carrillo on Friday.

Analy put together 361 yards of offense to remain unbeaten through two weeks. Carrillo is 1-1.

Newman completed 21 of 34 pass attempts for 228 yards and three touchdowns, one in each of the first three quarters, as Analy took a 20-14 lead.

In the final quarter, Newman decided to take it upon himself, and rushed for a 3-yard score to put the game away, 27-14, with 7:04 left.

Both of Carrillo’s quarterbacks were injured early in the game - junior Jake Wolski went down before the Pumas even touched the ball while playing defense on Analy’s opening possession. He dislocated his right (throwing) thumb during a tackle in the Tigers first scoring drive.

Then senior Fhestus Chomba went down early in the second quarter with an injured left knee. He remained in the game, but was clearly uncomfortable at times. In total, the Pumas went 4-of-10 passing with only 11 total yards.

Analy coach Daniel Bourdon credited his defensive line for minimizing Carrillo’s ability to get an aerial game going.

“Our defense flew around and put pressure on their quarterbacks,” he said. “We knew we had to contain their running game. But they had a heck of a game.”

Hampered in the air, Carrillo ran the ball 53 times, but only averaged 2.8 yards a play. Overall, the Pumas rushed for 148 yards.

Carrillo coach Jay Higgins praised his team’s heart despite the early setbacks at key positions.

“Jake dislocates his thumb. Then Fhestus was our starter, and he did a really good job,” Higgins said. “But then he went down. It created an interesting dilemma.”

Higgins said he felt like the Pumas’ offensive line could protect Chomba and create space for running backs Josh Groesbeck, Cole Martin and Gabe DeBaca.

“Our O-line played pretty well and I thought we could compensate for our limitations and run our ground game,” he said. “We did get it going a few times, but stalled out a couple times too. You have to be able to finish.”

Analy took the early lead, 6-0, when Newman completed a 4-yard touchdown with 8:56 left in the first quarter. The score completed a 13-play drive, highlighted by a 15-yard run by Osiris Zamora. The point after attempt by Newman failed.

Carrillo came back late in the first quarter, though, and took the lead 7-6 on a DeBaca one-yard run and point-after by Sean Nagle. Chomba turned a broken pass-play into a 16-yard gain to help set up the score.

Midway through the second quarter, Analy’s Diego Munoz recovered a Carrillo fumble at the Tigers’ 45-yard line. Newman connected with Schuyler Van Weele on a 12-yard pass and two plays later connected with Ross Simmons for an 11-yard completion.

Then, with 7:35 left in the first half, Newman hit Andres Villagomez for a 10-yard touchdown and a 12-7 lead.

Carrillo’s Groesbeck recovered an Analy fumble at the Tigers’ 47, kicking off a 10-play drive - nine of which were runs - that ended with a Goesbeck 3-yard touchdown. Nagle’s point after was good to give Carrillo the lead, 14-12.

But Analy took over from there, as Ross Simmons grabbed a 22-yard pass from Newman with 6:37 left in the third quarter. Villagomez’ two-point conversion run made it 20-14 Analy.

With 7:30 left in the game, Newman pushed over a 1-yard score, then followed with his own point-after for a 27-14 win.
