Large-school football roundup: Cardinal Newman clinches first in NBL with 47-3 win

The Cardinals stretched their winning streak to six games with Friday's victory against its old rival Montgomery.|

Cardinal Newman clinched the North Bay League football championship with its 47-3 victory against visiting Montgomery Friday night.

The Cardinals are 6-0 in league with only a game at Windsor remaining. Everyone else in the NBL has at least two losses.

Quarterback Jordon Brookshire was a one-man wrecking crew against Montgomery. The 205-pound junior ran for four touchdowns and passed for another before taking a seat on the bench early in the third quarter.

The Cardinals led only 7-0 after one quarter and then broke the game open by scoring 26 points in the second.

Brookshire scored three times before halftime on runs of 10, 5 and 3 yards. He also threw a 35-yard scoring pass to Jason Dedrick.

Brookshire's final score came with 10:23 left in the third quarter on a 3-yard run.

Montgomery's Jordan Page kicked a 21-yard field goal on the last play of the game.

The Vikings are 2-7 overall and 2-4 league.

The Cardinals have won six in a row. Their two losses came in non-league games.

RANCHO COTATE 56, UKIAH 13

At Rohnert Park, Gunner Mefferd passed for four touchdowns and 256 yards.

As usual, Chris Taylor-Yamanoha was his favorite receiver. The two hooked up on a 58-yard touchdown and then one from 49 yards out.

Taylor-Yamanoha also had an interception and now has seven on the season.

Danny Shelton was the game's leading rusher with 142 yards on 10 carries. He scored on runs of 9 and 55 yards.

The Cougars led 21-0 at halftime and scored 28 in the third period to assume a commanding lead.

WINDSOR 29, MARIA CARRILLO 7

At Santa Rosa, the Jaguars' defense held the Pumas to their lowest points total of the season.

Windsor gabbed a 6-0 lead after one quarter and increased the margin to 16-7 at intermission. Carrillo led briefly, 7-6, before a 23-yard field goal by Dalton Mullins put the Jaguars ahead for good.

Wide receiver Curtis Johnson had his most productive game of the season for Windsor. He grabbed two touchdown passes (36 and 13 yards) from quarterback Max Brown.

CASA GRANDE 56, SANTA ROSA 21

At Petaluma, Spencer Torkelson and Andrew Floerke each ran for two touchdowns.

The Gauchos led 14-0 after one quarter and stretched the advantage to 42-7 by halftime.

Quarterback JJ Anderson had a good night passing as he completed 13 of 18 passes for 230 yards. Nic Petri was the leading receiver with three catches good for 86 yards.

Torkelson wound up carrying the ball nine times for 85 yards while Floerke finished with 64 yards on 11 touches.

Casa is 3-6 overall and 3-3 in league. The Gauchos finish up with Montgomery.

'If we win our last game we should get in the NCS tournament,' coach Trent Herzog said. 'We need to win that one to show we belong.'

ANALY 61, ELSIE ALLEN 0

At Santa Rosa, the Tigers are now one win away from a perfect regular season.

Analy plays Petaluma next Friday.

The Tigers put 47 points on the board in the first quarter against the Lobos.

In limited playing time, quarterback Jack Newman completed all five of his passes with four of those going for touchdowns.

Osiris Zamora caught three scoring passes and Lucas Housman hauled in one.

PINER 62, HEALDSBURG 27

At Healdsburg, Jose Ramirez ran for six touchdowns.

The senior finished the night with 338 yards on 34 carries.

The Prospectors gained a total of 567 yards with 426 of those coming on the ground.

Ramirez scored three times in the first half as Piner raced to a 28-6 lead at intermission.

SONOMA VALLEY 34, EL MOLINO 28

At Forestville, Max Yankovich scored the winning touchdown on a 23-yard run with 1:59 left on the clock.

The Dragons trailed 28-21 heading to the fourth quarter.

Sonoma got its opportunity when an El Molino player fumbled on his own 45-yard line.

Sonoma is 2-8 and 2-3 and the Lions fall to 1-7 and 1-4.
