Diablo Valley’s Brandon Brown kicked a 37-yard field goal in overtime as the Vikings defeated Santa Rosa JC, 35-32, Saturday night at Bailey Field.

The Bear Cubs got the ball first in the extra period and on their initial play, Mitch Hood threw his only interception of the night.

DVC started at the 25-yard line, gained eight yards on three plays and then Brown kicked the ball through the middle of the goal posts.

It was a bitter defeat for Santa Rosa in its final regular-season game. The Bear Cubs thought they had the game won when Vikings quarterback Drew Anderson threw an incomplete pass on fourth down with his team trailing, 29-24, and under two minutes remaining.

However, a late flag came in for pass interference and DVC had a new set of downs on the Bear Cubs’ 34-yard line. At 1:11 on the clock, Anderson found Marcus Armstrong-Brown in the end zone. Following a two-point conversion, the Vikings led 32-29.

Santa Rosa took the ensuing kickoff and marched down the field with the big plays coming on passes from Hood to Brandon Singh and Jordan Jackson.

That set the stage for a 31-yard field goal. Andros Pedroza’s kick was perfect with 16 seconds left in regulation.

Santa Rosa ends the regular season with a 6-4 record and 3-2 mark in the Bay 6 Conference. The Bear Cubs should receive a bowl invitation, but it’s likely the loss to DVC will cost them a home game.

Saturday’s game featured more than 900 yards of total offense. DVC had 527 yards and SRJC finished with 409.

Kerr Johnson Jr. was SRJC’s leading receiver with four catches good for 124 yards.

Ja’Narrick James led the Bear Cubs’ rushing attack with 61 yards on 16 carries.

Pedroza was perfect on the night with four field goals and two extra points.
