Piner High may finally get field lights

With a proposal now approved, the next step is gaining permission from the state architecture department, followed by fundraising.|

Piner High School assistant principal Ryan Thompson emailed some good news to the school’s athletic boosters on Monday. Santa Rosa City Schools has initiated a process that may finally bring Friday-night lights to Piner.

“I have been informed that SRCS has had an approved proposal for lights on the football field,” Thompson wrote. “They are working on getting the finalized plans from the company and are looking at developing two different types of plans; both of which hope to help decrease the impact on the neighborhood, while also providing a high quality facility for our student athletes.”

The next step, Thompson said, was winning approval from the state architecture department. Then comes the fun part: fundraising.

Installing lights at other Santa Rosa high schools cost about $200,000 per campus. Piner has a long way to go to raise that kind of money. But at least the Prospectors have taken their first step.
