Dissa and Data: Cloverdale’s Marcus Poe a force on football field, basketball court, draws comparison to Eagles legend Craig McMillan

Marcus Poe, averaging nearly 17 points per game on the basketball court after playing football at Cloverdale High, is drawing comparisons to Eagles hoops legend Craig McMillan from head hoops coach Steve Bernardi|

Cloverdale basketball coach Steve Bernardi continues to be amazed at the athletic prowess of Marcus Poe. The senior also played football for the Eagles.

“He’s the best all-around athlete from Cloverdale since Craig McMillan and one of the best ever from these parts,” Bernardi said. “He’s quick and agile on both the basketball court and the football field.”

Poe is averaging nearly 17 points this basketball season and played wide receiver and defensive end in football.

Comparing him to McMillan is a lofty superlative. The current Santa Rosa Junior College basketball coach led the Eagles to two North Coast Section Division III-A titles and also was a starting guard for the University of Arizona when that school made it to the NCAA Final Four in 1988.

Casa stars honored at SSU

Two Casa Grande products earned regional and national accolades for their season with the Sonoma State Seawolves women’s soccer team.

Senior midfielder Margi Osmundson was named first-team Division II National Soccer Coaches Association All-American as well as first-team All-West Region. She is joined on the All-West first team by fellow Casa grad, senior goalkeeper Ashley Luis.

Osmundson had five assists and one goal this season.

Luis posted a 958-minute scoreless streak this season and had an .85 save percentage.

Analy coach new, familiar

The Analy girls basketball team has a new, yet familiar, name at the helm this year.

Veteran coach Earl Pasamonte agreed to return to the lead the Tigers after former head coach Tom Corriveau died unexpectedly in June.

Pasamonte formerly coached the Analy girls for several years, until Corriveau took over for him in the 2012-2013 season.

Corriveau led the team to a 9-3 third-place Sonoma County League finish last year and an NCS playoff run. A prep sports star at Piner in the 1970s, Corriveau went on to become a successful coach in youth sports over the past two decades. He died at the age of 57.

Pasamonte, a physical education teacher at Analy since 2006, also coaches badminton.

Two locals help SSU squad

Santa Rosa High grad Hannah Sourek is averaging 8.3 points per game for the Sonoma State women’s basketball team, which is 5-7 overall and 1-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

Coming off the bench, freshman Kylie Kiech, who prepped at Cardinal Newman High School and was the Press Democrat All-Empire Player of the Year last year, is averaging 3.6 points per game.

The Seawolves next play at Cal State Monterey Bay on New Year’s Day.
