The Montgomery Vikings kept their league title hopes alive with a 4-0 victory against Windsor on Wednesday night in Santa Rosa.

Montgomery is 8-2-1 in league and 11-4-2 overall.

Bryan Rosales, playing his first game for the Vikings, was the offensive hero against Windsor. The sophomore scored twice and assisted on another goal.

After transferring from Santa Rosa High, Rosales was granted his eligibility by the State CIF Appeals Panel on Tuesday.

“He’s obviously an impactful player,” coach Jon Schwan said. “He makes players around him better.

“I’m glad for the kid. He waited a long time for this.”

The other goals were by Jay Schlesinger and Bryan Mora.

Jordan Page was the winning keeper.

The Vikings have won five in a row and are playing their best soccer of the season.

“The difference is, we’re finding the back of the net more frequently these days,” Schwan said. “We were having trouble scoring earlier in the season. It feels good to score goals.

“We’re right there hanging around near the top of the league standings. It’s going to go right down to the final night.”

SANTA ROSA 2, CARDINAL NEWMAN 0

At Santa Rosa High School, Santa Rosa High’s boys soccer team maintained its narrow lead in the NBL standings by defeating visiting Cardinal Newman.

With four games remaining in league play, the Panthers have one loss.

Six minutes into the game, Gavin Weitzenberg scored the only goal Santa Rosa would need against the Cardinals. Shamus Young got the assist as he took a crossed ball off his chest and laid it down for his teammate to kick into the net.

The second goal, off the foot of Luca Mazante, came just before halftime and was unassisted.

“It was hard for us to generate scoring opportunities,” Panthers coach Antonio Garcia said. “Newman played good, compact defense.”

It turned out two scores were more than enough for Panthers’ goalkeeper Jairo Villalobos.

Santa Rosa would just as soon forget about last week. The Panthers lost to Rancho Cotate and nonleague foe Marin Academy and tied with Windsor.

“That was a tough week,” Garcia said. “We’re looking forward to the rest of the season. We know we control our destiny in the NBL. As long as we don’t lose, we’ll be the champions.”

MARIA CARRILLO 5, UKIAH 0

At Ukiah, Cobi Chang had a career night with three goals to lead the visitors.

The junior midfielder scored once in the first half and twice after intermission. Coming into the game, he had scored only one goal this season.

Senior Daven Crossland also had a memorable game as he scored once and assisted on two other goals.

The other Carrillo goal was scored by Frankie Garnica.

Splitting goalkeeping chores for the Pumas were Florian McLelland and Josue Cabrera. They made a total of eight saves.

Carrillo’s record is 7-6 and 5-6.

CASA GRANDE 1, RANCHO COTATE 0

At Petaluma, Edwin Ajquiy scored in the second overtime period to lift the Gauchos to the win. The goal came in the 96th minute.

The sequence began with David Luis passing to Maury Lopez. Lopez then kicked the ball off the goalpost and it bounced to Ajquiy in front of the net. He then kicked it past the goalkeeper.

Casa improves to 10-5-3 and 6-5 while Rancho falls to 11-5-2 and 8-3.
