Cardinal Newman sits at 12th and Healdsburg is in 16th.

In individual matches, most of the Redwood Empire wrestlers seeded in the top 8 in their weight classes made it out of the quarterfinals.

Ukiah had five wrestlers reach the quarterfinals: Dakota Perez (113), Francisco Noreiga (152), Cody Shepard (170), Manuel Martinez (182) and Nicolas Iverson, the top seed in the 285-pound class.

Healdsburg's winners were Dominic Montanez (113), Andrew Nunez (132), Joel Anguiano (152) and Anthony Merlo (170).

Other Empire schools with multiple wrestlers in the quarterfinals are Cardinal Newman (Jake Butler, Mason Levinson and Gunner Hayman); Casa Grande (Angelo Arcamo and Kameron Chase); Maria Carrillo (Cameron Casey and Josh Groesbeck) and Willits (Justin Thom and Colten Horger).

The semifinal and final rounds take place Saturday.

GIRLS STATE TOURNAMENT

Two Redwood Empire wrestlers, both in the 235-pound weight class, reached Saturday's semifinals of the state girls wrestling championships in Visalia.

Rancho Cotate's Vickie Espinoza racked up three victories Friday to reach the semifinals while Petaluma's Michelle Larsen, who had a bye in the first round, beat two opponents.

Espinoza and Larsen could face each other in the final Saturday if they beat their semifinal opponents.

Willits' Gabby Agenbroad was the only other Empire wrestler to reach the quarterfinals Friday. A total of 15 girls from local schools made the state tournament.
