Women's pro bowling tour makes stop in Rohnert Park

Double Decker Lanes in Rohnert Park is playing host to the 2016 Professional Women's Bowling Association's Sonoma County stop with games continuing through Saturday. A $10,000 top prize will be awarded to one of 76 participants from nine countries.

Friday's Round 1 qualifiers include Latvia's Diana Zavjalova, who bowled a perfect game and is in first place with 1,384 total pinfall. Ohio's Jennifer Higgins is the leading American in third place with 1,330 total pinfall. Emily Fagan, a former Team USA bowler, placed 49th with 1,099 total pinfall.

A few amateur bowlers from Sonoma County found themselves on the board as well. Santa Rosa's Julie Yokoyama placed 63rd with a 1,041 total pinfall and right behind her in 64th place and a 1,036 total pinfall is Petaluma's Michelle Shumway.

Each of the contestants bowled six games per round, and those who placed on Friday will bowl another six games Saturday morning. From 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the top-placing contestants will bowl in the casher's round. Then from 1 to 4 p.m., contestants will compete in round-robin match play before the group stepladder finals at 5 p.m. The two top qualifiers will be invited to bowl during the televised finals that will be taped May 26.

This is the second stop of the tour, which started in Las Vegas on April 29. The 2016 tour is larger than last year's, with 14 events instead of 11. Last year's event marked the return of the PWBA, which was on a 12-year hiatus The PWBA was founded in 1960 and holds high-level events across the country.
