North Coast Section baseball playoffs: Maria Carrillo moves on with 7-1 win

Ryan Sellner tossed a three-hitter and shut out Kennedy over the final six innings as Maria Carrillo beat the visitors from Fremont 7-1 in a North Coast Section Division 2 quarterfinal baseball game on Saturday.

The junior got into a jam in the first inning but escaped with only one run scoring. After that, he had no problems with the Titans.

The Pumas, the No. 4 seed, will get another home game on Tuesday when Northgate comes to town. The Walnut Creek school defeated Ukiah and Casa Grande in the first two rounds of the tournament.

Carrillo tied the game in the bottom of the first and took control with a three-run uprising in the fifth.

After two were out, Aidan Nagle reached base on an error and Vincent Riggio followed with a single.

Later in the inning, Hunter Estabrook was hit by a pitch and John Nieman's single knocked in two runs. Grant Hermone's base hit brought in the third run.

Carrillo finished with 10 hits, with Nieman and Jo Bynum leading the way with two apiece.

“Sellner did a great job,” coach Derek DeBenedetti said. “The defense was tremendous behind him and throughout the game, we had consistent, quality at-bats.”

The Pumas, champions of the North Bay League, play on with a 19-9 record.

ANALY 3, ALBANY 2

The Tigers took advantage of a wild streak by Cougars pitcher Clayton McDonald to win the quarterfinal game played in Sebastopol.

Analy scored all its runs in the third inning as McDonald hit four batters and three of those scored.

The victory earns the No. 4 Tigers (22-6) a berth in the semifinals and another home game. On Tuesday, they will play No. 10 El Cerrito (16-11). Analy is 11-1 on its home field.

Jack Newman, Drew Valez, Devin Ogston and Nolan Alvarez all were hit by pitches in the third.

The first run scored on David Codoni's hit up the middle and the second trotted home when Alvarez was hit. The final run came home on Jacob Beeler's sacrifice fly.

“We could've scored a couple more runs,” coach Jeff Ogston said. “We made a couple of base-running mistakes.”

Aside from his wildness streak, McDonald was solid. He allowed four hits while Albany (18-10) collected eight.

Codoni, Tayler Cullen and Johnny Gomes had singles for the Tigers and Carter Merlaud doubled.
