Michael Davis collected 408 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns on Saturday in Petaluma as St. Vincent defeated Elsie Allen, 43-18, in the season opener for both teams.

The senior rushed for 274 yards and caught three passes good for another 134.

It was the second highest rushing total by a St. Vincent player since 1997 when Ray Tamblyn had 304 yards in a game. Davis had touchdown runs of 38, 28 and 43 yards and caught a pass from his brother, Will, for 74 yards and a score.

“He would've had more yardage but several of his long runs were called back because of penalties,” coach Gary Galloway said.

Elsie Allen hung with the home team for three quarters and the score was 30-18 heading to the final period. St. Vincent put the game away by outscoring the Lobos, 13-0, in the fourth.

Each team committed six turnovers and the referees were kept busy throwing penalty flags all afternoon.

“It's obvious we have a lot to work on,” Galloway said. “I liked the effort. The guys played their hearts out.”

Diego Mendoza scored two of Elsie Allen's touchdowns. The first was on a 63-yard pass from Erik Vargas and then a short time later, he found the end zone on a 4-yard run. Vargas accounted for the other score on a 4-yard run.

Lobos coach Madison Lott saw a silver lining after the game.

“I'm proud of my players,” he said. “They played so hard. We were in the game until we ran out of gas in the fourth quarter.

“I thought we controlled most of the second quarter and played right with St. Vincent in the third.”

At Walnut Creek, the visitors fell behind 28-0 after one quarter.

“It was a tough match-up for us,” Eagles coach Chad Talley said. “They had a big size and speed advantage.”

There was a bright side for Cloverdale.

“Our kids were resilient,” Talley said. No one laid down and quit playing, That was good to see.

“There was a lot of frustration but no quit. We have a lot more work to do. I think the kids learned quite a bit from this experience.”

Cloverdale will travel to Irvington for another road game Saturday.

RINCON VALLEY CHRISTIAN 19, TRINITY CHRISTIAN 12

At RVC, Willie Maples scored on a 4-yard run midway through the fourth quarter as the Eagles rallied for a season-opening victory.

Corey Olson scored RVC's other three points. He kicked a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter. Olson, also the team's quarterback, completed 6 of 12 passes for 63 yards.
