The Cardinals will play Sacred Heart of San Francisco) in today’s title game at 4:30 p.m.

Both Newman and Regis can field a team with three players 6-foot0 or taller. The Cardinals can go 6-3, 6-5 and 6-0 while Regis has players 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1.

Defense was the key to the semifinal game and Newman’s turned out to be superior.

“Our defense was great and kept us in the game,” coach Monica Mertle said. The Cardinals played man-to-man.

Regis jumped out to an 11-4 lead after one quarter, but then the Cardinals held Regis to 2 points in the second to gain the lead for good. At intermission, the score was 17-13.

Tiffany Salinas led the the way for Newman with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

SANTA ROSA 50,?OAKLAND 40

Santa Rosa advanced to the consolation championship of the Newman Classic with the win.

Emily Codding finished with a double-double (11 points and 13 rebounds) while Sara Howard led all scorers with 13.

The Panthers grabbed a 16-9 lead after one quarter. Oakland pressed trying to get back in the game but it didn’t bother Santa Rosa.

SAN MARIN 52,?SONOMA VALLEY 37

In the Lady Dragons Classic, the visitors from Marin dropped five 3-point shots on the home team in the first quarter.

San Marin finished the game with eight treys.

“That first quarter was demoralizing,” Sonoma coach Sil Coccia said. “We never recovered.”

The Mustangs led 15-6 after the first period and stretched their advantage to 30-16 by halftime.

“San Marin deserves the credit,” Coccia added. “They were more aggressive, pushed us away and then finished us off.”

Keleah Williams led San Marin with 27 while Jenny Eggers was the Dragons’ top scorer with 13.

Sonoma and Montgomery play for third place today at 4:30 p.m.

MENLO-ATHERTON 54,?MONTGOMERY 31

The Bears broke open a close game by outscoring the Vikings, 13-2, in the second quarter.

Menlo then increased the advantage to 22 heading to the fourth period. Montgomery hung tough through one quarter and trailed, 15-12.

“Early on we had rhythm to our offense and were switching on defense,” Vikings coach Steve Bell said. “Then, we started turning the ball over and had our problems rebounding.

“Obviously this was a good challenge. Menlo-Atherton is a very good team.”

The Vikings (2-1) play at 4:30 p.m. today.

CASA GRANDE 47,?SAN RAFAEL 41

The Gauchos trailed through three quarters of the Big House Invitational game before rallying to get the victory.

The home team was behind four points going to the fourth quarter.

Joy Jovick had a big game with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Claire Killian knocked down 16.

“It was a good back-and-forth game,” Casa coach Dan Sack said. “We hit more shots than they did in the final quarter and pulled it off.
