Prep sports roundup: Windsor High School cheer team's winning ways, more

Windsor High School is moving along in its preparations for when competitive cheer becomes a CIF sport in the 2017-18 school year.

The 21-member co-ed Jaguars team placed second in sideline and third in show competitions last week in Las Vegas.

Other schools are exploring fielding teams, Windsor athletic director Jeff Hardie said, including Casa Grande, Rancho Cotate and Ukiah. Other schools have said they will wait to offer cheer until lacrosse is also available.

In 2015, the California Interscholastic Federation and state legislators agreed to classify competition cheer as an official sport beginning next school year.

KIECH CAN SCORE

Cardinal Newman class of 2015 grad Kylie Kiech is leading all scorers on the Sonoma State Seawolves women's basketball team.

Kiech, the 2014-15 Press Democrat All-Empire Large Schools Player of the Year as a senior, is averaging a team best 13.4 points per game. The sophomore guard is also averaging four rebounds and two assists per game for the Seawolves who are 8-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

ROAD WARRIORS

Montgomery's opponent tonight in the NCS boys soccer Division 2 semifinal won't be daunted by having to travel to Santa Rosa for the game. Tennyson posted a 9-1-3 record in road games this season.

The Lancers (17-5-4 overall), who finished first in the West Alameda-Shoreline League, were a high-scoring squad - 65 goals in 26 games - while surrendering only 25 goals. Senior Gabriel Arias tallied 15 goals to lead the team and fellow senior Cristian Guzman added 14. By comparison, Montgomery totaled 67 goals in 26 games while giving up 24.

SCL SHOCKER

Worth noting even as the NCS basketball tournaments have gotten under way, the big surprise from the NBL and SCL postseason league tournaments was Analy's upset of regular-season champion Sonoma Valley in the SCL girls final.

Sonoma Valley dominated the league, posting a 12-0 record, but they were handled Saturday night at SRJC. With the Tigers' Bella Neidermair posting a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Sophie McFadin adding 12 points, Analy came away with a 45-35 victory. The Analy boys team made it a Tigers sweep Saturday night with a 58-41 win against Petaluma behind 21 points from Aidan Toner-Rodgers and 16 from Dominic Tripodi.

LONG DIVISION

What a difference a division makes. Kelseyville won the NCL I boys title with a 13-1 record, a game better than Cloverdale.

But when it came to seedings for the NCS basketball tournament, Kelseyville - as a Division 4 program - drew a No. 9 seed and begins tournament play tonight at home against No. 8 Healdsburg (league champions always get a first-round home game). Cloverdale, on the other hand, is a Division 5 program and the Eagles earned the No. 1 seed in their division. They play No. 16 seed St. Vincent tonight.
