Members of Petaluma's 2012 Little League World Series team to reunite Sunday

Petaluma’s famed 2012 Little League World Series team members will reunite Sunday to remember their achievement, while the town will also highlight its push for a sports field for disabled athletes.

The Petaluma National Little League team, composed of ?all-star players, advanced all the way to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn., five years ago and ultimately finished second in the United States and third in the world.

They returned home to local adoration and a parade that wound through downtown Petaluma.

The boys, then 11 and 12 years old, are now juniors and seniors at Petaluma and Casa Grande high schools. Most still play baseball.

A commemoration for them will begin at 11 a.m. at Carter Field, where the league played.

Also Sunday, Petalumans will mark progress toward a Miracle League field being built at Lucchesi Park.

A baseball diamond and other play equipment will serve children and adults with physical and mental disabilities with their own baseball league.

The Petaluma effort is part of a larger movement to bring adaptable play structures and inclusionary athletics to North Bay children with disabilities, and marks the second such program in Sonoma County.

The first, the Challenger League, began in 1991, and serves about 120 kids annually through its fall league, played at the Mark West Little League fields in northern Santa Rosa.

Like the Challenger League, the Miracle League will also use “buddies” to help players on the field and off.
