High school basketball roundup: Healdsburg boys roll past Cloverdale

Healdsburg freshman Dylan Hayman turned in a heady performance on Tuesday night to power the host Greyhounds to a 64-52 nonleague basketball victory against Cloverdale.

Hayman had 24 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, and the Eagles had no answers for how to slow him down.

“Hayman is a phenomenal player. He just gets the game,” Healdsburg coach Yasha Mokaram said. “It's incredible to watch him play. He is getting better every day.”

Healdsburg's Desmond Swan added 16 points, including four three-pointers, to supplement Hayman on the offensive end for the Greyhounds (4-3).

“We were shooting the ball well. We had a few good offensive performances by a couple of our guys. It was a combination of execution and good shot selection on offense,” Mokaram said. “We didn't play particularly well defensively.”

Meanwhile, Cloverdale switched to the zone defense after starting in man-to-man, but Hayman was able to find space aligning at the high post.

“Hayman is really a complete player. He can shoot from the outside, penetrate and pass. He had a really nice game,” Cloverdale coach Pat Fitzgerald said. “Swan hurt us from the perimeter.”

Cloverdale (6-3) trailed 29-19 at halftime and 47-32 after three quarters, but prevented the game from becoming a blowout in the fourth quarter by edging the Greyhounds 20-17.

“It was a hard-fought game. We hung around and didn't give an inch. We didn't let them get away from us,” Fitzgerald said. “Healdsburg plays really good defense. Their big guys are tough.”

The Eagles were led by Jordan Persons (14 points, 3 assists, 3 steals) and Christian Chavez (10 points, 4 assists).

PETALUMA 60, CASA GRANDE 49

The visiting Trojans (3-3) used inside muscle to overpower the Gauchos (2-4) in a nonleague game.

“Our game plan was to pound it inside and take advantage of our interior strength and our big guys converted,” Petaluma coach Scott Behrs said. “Casa Grande tried to double-team our bigs inside, but we were able to pass it out and get fouls.”

The damage inside was done by the Trojans' Jack Anderson (24 points, 5 rebounds) and Devin Gottschall (24 points, 6 rebounds, 8 of 8 on free throws).

Garrett Siebels (20 points) led Casa Grande with his shooting from the outside.

“Siebels was hitting some tough shots,” Behrs said. “He kept Casa in the game.”

GIRLS: DRAKE 60, PINER 45

In a nonleague game, visiting Piner (5-3) had a difficult fourth quarter, turning a close five-point disadvantage into a 15-point losing deficit to the Pirates (2-4) of San Anselmo.

“The fourth quarter is where the wheels came off a little bit,” Piner coach Vixay Chantha said. “We had to press and gamble and we made some dumb fouls.”

For its part, Drake hit 90 percent of its free throws and held a sizeable advantage in rebounds.
