The Maria Carrillo girls soccer team continues to steamroll its North Bay League opponents. On Wednesday night, the Pumas vanquished Cardinal Newman 2-0 at Sonoma Academy in a contest dominated by Carrillo, which outshot the Cardinals 20-2.

“The first 25 to 30 minutes was a very tight game, but in the second half we were in our attacking third of the field the majority of the time,” Maria Carrillo coach Debra LaPrath said. “In the second half we were moving the ball well.”

After a scoreless first half, Maria Carrillo (6-1, 9-2) struck in the 47th minute on a crossing pass by Kitana Gonzalez to Teagan Coleman, who crushed the ball past the Cardinals (4-2, 9-4) for a 1-0 Pumas lead.

“It was a great goal by Teagan,” LaPrath said. “It was a great second effort by her.”

Eight minutes later, the Pumas added an insurance goal when Gonzalez headed in a 9-yard shot into the upper left-center of the net off a corner kick from Teagan.

“That goal happened so fast. It was a great header by Kitana and a perfect crossing pass by Teagan,” LaPrath said.

Casa Grande 4, Santa Rosa 0

The visiting Gauchos scored four goals in a span of 10 minutes early in the second half to turn a scoreless NBL game into a rout.

“It was an eruption,” Casa Grande coach Vinnie Cortezzo said. “We dominated the first half but didn't have any goal-scoring chances. Once we got the first goal, it took the pressure off.”

Between the 46th and 56th minutes the Gauchos (3-4, 4-6) rang the register with a penalty kick for a goal (Mia Santander), a 10-yard breakaway goal (Gizela Carranza, assist Santander), a 30-yard free kick for a score (Santander) and a 5-yard goal (Carranza, assist Cassie Walsh).

“This was a breakdown of our whole team. This is one of the worst games we have played all season. We just didn't play as a team. Casa completely outplayed us,” Santa Rosa coach Nikki Kumasaka said. “But this doesn't define our ability or our season. We move on to the next game.”

Santa Rosa is 3-4 in league and 7-5 overall.

In boys games:

Cardinal Newman 3, Maria Carrillo 2

Trailing midway through the second half 2-1 in an NBL matchup, the Cardinal Newman boys rallied for goals in the 60th and 63rd minutes to pull out a 3-2 win at Sonoma Academy.

The Pumas' equalizer to tie the score 2-2 came via a goal off a corner kick by Shea Batchelder with an assist to Matthew Nielson. The game-winner three minutes later came on a pass from Nielson to a streaking Josh Thompson, who converted for the goal.

“It was a hustle goal. Matthew never gave up on the play,” Cardinal Newman coach Ryan Corriveau said.

The rally by Newman (2-3-1, 6-5-2) overcame a spectacular goal in the 55th minute by the Pumas' Ryan Dieter, who slanted a free-kick into the corner, top-shelf from 20 yards out to temporarily give Maria Carrillo (4-2, 6-3-1) a 2-1 lead.

“It was a beautiful kick,” Corriveau said. “Ryan nailed it.”

Santa Rosa 5, Casa Grande 3

In an NBL matchup, the visiting Panthers (3-4, 3-5) scored goals in the 5th, 9th, 30th and 35th minutes to take a 4-0 lead and put the game away early. The Gauchos (2-4, 5-7-1) made it close with three goals in the second half, but it wasn't enough.

“We got off to a fast start and moved the ball really well,” Santa Rosa coach Antonio Garcia said. “Everyone had good energy. We feel like we controlled the tempo pretty well.”

The first four Panthers goals were scored by Anthony Lopez (10 yards), Giordan Vilamoski (4 yards), Brian Sanchez (penalty kick), and Mason West (12 yards).

“We haven't gotten the results we wanted this year, but today we did,” Garcia said.
