OAKLAND - The Athletics celebrated the occasion of their 50th anniversary in Oakland Tuesday night with a 10-2 win against the Chicago White Sox, giving them their first series win of the season.

Rather than entertain a packed house of 46,028 with the drama of a tight game, the A's staged a five-run, two-out rally in the first inning to get the party started and got seven shutout innings from Trevor Cahill to beat Chicago handily for the second consecutive game.

Having won the first two games of the series, the A's can get a sweep by beating the White Sox Wednesday afternoon.

The A's first inning started innocently enough as Chicago starter Miguel Gonzalez retired Matt Joyce on a fly to right and Marcus Semien on a ground ball to short.

Jed Lowrie, one of the hottest hitters in baseball, jump-started the A's with a solo home run to right field, his fifth of the season. Khris Davis and Matt Olson followed with singles, Matt Chapman walked and then Mark Canha and Stephen Piscotty hit back-to-back two-run doubles.

It was 5-0 by the time some tailgaters were just settling into their free seats.

In the fourth inning, the A's added three more runs on a two-run single by Jonathan Lucroy and a sacrifice fly by Semien. The A's scored twice in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Piscotty and a bloop RBI single from Lucroy.

The beneficiary of all the offense was Cahill, making first start for the A's since 2011. A former second-round draft pick, Cahill was 40-35 with a 3.91 earned run average in 96 starts in three seasons before being traded to Arizona and also playing with Atlanta (2015), the Chicago Cubs (2015-16), San Diego (2017) and Kansas City (2017).

Cahill was signed by the A's on March 19 following injuries to projected starters Jharel Cotton and Paul Blackburn and had two starts for Class AAA Nashville before being called up to start Tuesday night.

Looking like more than a stop-gap on an injured staff, Cahill threw seven shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out eight with two walks. Cahill threw 92 pitches, 56 of them strikes. Coming one night after Daniel Mengden's eight-inning performance against Chicago, it gave the A's back-to-back games of seven or more innings from a starter for the first time this season.

The White Sox broke through on a two-run home run by Yoan Moncada, his second of the season, off reliever Ryan Dull in the eighth inning. It was Dull's first appearance of the season after recovering from a shoulder injury.

Dull did manage to strike out four batters in the inning - the first reaching on a swinging strike three on a wild pitch - to tie a club record he shares with three others.

Lou Trivino, called up from Class AAA Nashville Tuesday, survived two singles and a walk to pitch a scoreless ninth inning.
