A Santa Rosa man was in jail Monday on suspicion of slamming his Dodge pickup into the back of another car while drunk, then fleeing the crash, the CHP said.
Mario Daniel Ballinas, 46, faces numerous charges, including hit-and-run, DUI, driving with a suspended license and violation of probation after the Friday afternoon crash.
The crash took place shortly before 2 p.m. on the College Avenue offramp from northbound Highway 101. Ballinas’s pickup ran into the back of a Mercedes sedan stopped for traffic, ramming the Mercedes into the flatbed trailer in front of it, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said in a news release.
The drivers of both cars agreed to pull onto the shoulder of the road, Sloat said. But instead of doing so, Ballinas drove away down College Avenue. Before Ballinas fled, the driver of the Mercedes managed to get pictures of him and was able to provide the truck’s license number to police.
Officers found Ballinas and the Mercedes identified him as the driver, Sloat said.
Ballinas failed field sobriety tests and was booked into jail with bail set at $50,000.
