Cal men fall to St. Mary's; women beat Santa Clara

Calvin Hermanson scored 22 points with four 3-pointers and Saint Mary’s beat Cal 74-63 on Saturday night to end a two-game losing streak.

Jordan Ford added a career-high 17 points and six rebounds, Emmett Naar had 13 points and eight assists and Jock Landale scored 13 points with six rebounds for the Gaels (6-2).

Saint Mary’s had one of its best offensive games of the season to bounce back after falling out of the Top 25 following back-to-back losses to Washington State and Georgia.

The Gaels did it on a night when their leading scorer, Landale, wasn’t much of a factor. Landale shot 5 of 8 but had trouble in the paint against Cal’s two big men, 7-foot-1 center Kingsley Okoroh and 6-11 forward Marcus Lee.

Ford helped pick up the slack on both ends of the floor. The Saint Mary’s sophomore held Darius McNeill to a season-low three points after he reached double figures in his previous five games.

It was only the second game between the two Northern California schools in the past 12 years.

Lee scored a career-high 23 points and Nick Hamilton added 16 for the Golden Bears (3-5). Cal, which never led, has dropped four of five.

WOMEN: No. 24 Cal 79, ?Santa Clara 41

Kristine Anigwe scored 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting and ?No. 24 Cal cruised to a win against Santa Clara on Saturday.

The Golden Bears (5-2) dominated from the start as Kiana Smith opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers and Anigwe had six consecutive points in a 16-0 run.

Cal was 8 of 14 in the first quarter with five 3-pointers and led 26-8.

Santa Clara (2-5) missed its last six shots of the second quarter and trailed 38-17 at the half.

The Golden Bears made seven consecutive shots in the third quarter, when they shot 11 of 15, including three treys in a row, and pushed the lead to 64-27.

Cal shot 53 percent (29 of 55) and made 10 of 25 from distance. The Bears also turned 22 Bronco turnovers into 36 points.

Ashlyn Herlihy had 10 points for Santa Clara, which finished at 32 percent (13 of 41) with just one 3.
