Giants blow lead, lose in 10 (w/video)

SAN FRANCISCO — Jeremy Affeldt hadn't allowed a home run all season … until Friday.

The Philadelphia Phillies' Cody Asche hit a game-tying two-run homer off Affeldt in the top of the eighth inning, and the Giants lost 5-3 in 10 innings at AT&T Park.

A terrific outing by Madison Bumgarner was spoiled, as he went seven innings and allowed one run and four hits and struck out nine in the no-decision.

Bumgarner left the game with San Francisco holding a 3-1 lead-thanks to a fourth-inning, three-run home run by Michael Morse. The Giants were looking to win back-to-back home games for the first time in two months.

That didn't happen thanks in large part to a fly ball that kept carrying. Asche's home run looked harmless off the bat, but it was hit to the right part of the ballpark. It landed in the first row of the arcade over the 24-foot wall in right field and was the first home run Affeldt allowed to a left-hander since April 24, 2011.

The Giants blew a chance in the bottom of the eighth when Pablo Sandoval was thrown out at home after a two-out single by Joe Panik in what was an ill-advised send by third base coach Tim Flannery. Marlon Byrd's throw beat Sandoval to the plate by at least 20 feet.

The Phillies pushed across two in the 10th, helped by a mistake by Javier Lopez. He fielded a bunt by Andres Blanco and tried to throw out at Asche at third. The throw was late, and runners were on the corners.

Jimmy Rollins walked to load the bases, and Chase Utley was grazed by a pitch to force in the winning run.

Bumgarner was strong at the start and the end of his 110-pitch outing. He set down the first 10 hitters on the night, half of them coming by strikeout, and also retired the final eight batters he faced.

Morse gave the Giants the lead with his first home run of the month, just his third since June 5 and only his second at home since May 15. It also helped alleviate frustrations after a 400-plus foot out in his first at-bat, one that even Phillies starter Cole Hamels thought was destined for extra bases.

Brandon Belt will travel with the Giants to Chicago next week, then depart for Pittsburgh to be examined by concussion specialist Micky Collins.

'We'll have another evaluation with that and see where he's at,' Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. 'He's about the same, so we think it's important that we get another look at him, another opinion to see where we're at.'

Belt went back on the seven-day concussion disabled list a week ago after symptoms recurred five games into his return from the DL.
