NBL football roundup: Montgomery stays atop Redwood division with victory

Montgomery High School solidified its hold on the top spot in the North Bay League-Redwood Division Friday night with a 29-8 victory over host Piner.

After a slow start for the Vikings, leading just 10-6 at the half, quarterback Khameron Perkins hit wide receiver Andre Williams for a quick score to open the third quarter.

Williams caught the ball over the middle and sped 55 yards for a touchdown that gave the Vikings much-needed energy, coach Vertis Patton said.

“That was really special,” he said. “He ran this skinny post up the middle and just took off. We don't know how fast this kid is. You can never overthrow him; he just runs past everybody.”

Perkins later connected with Kaih Johnson for a 63-yard score that gave Montgomery a 23-6 lead.

Jevon Heard had a 3-yard rushing score in the second quarter and added a 20-yard TD pass from Perkins late in the fourth quarter.

“Our defense keeps us in the game and gives our offense opportunities,” Patton said.

Linebacker Matt Carr had another stellar game, with 18 total tackles (solo and assists), while defensive end Noah Marshall added 8 tackles and 2 sacks.

The Vikings improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the division. Piner falls to 3-5 and 0-2.

Santa Rosa 68, Elsie Allen 0

The Panthers' Trevor Anderson threw for four touchdowns in host Santa Rosa's shutout over the Lobos in an NBL-Redwood matchup.

Santa Rosa took a 42-0 lead in the first quarter and the teams began to play with a running clock, Panthers coach Russell Ponce said.

Despite the lopsided result, Ponce had high praise for the Lobos.

“Those kids showed a lot of heart. It shows how much they love playing football. They're undersized but they play hard,” he said.

Later in the game, Ponce was able to give some of his players some experience at new positions and it paid off for two of them.

Senior Joshua Truong, typically a defensive tackle, was able to score on a 58-yard run in the third quarter.

Junior linebacker Justin Moura added a 70-yard rush for a touchdown in the fourth.

Newman 45, Windsor 7

The Cardinals remained undefeated in the NBL-Oak Division with a resounding win over host Windsor.

Newman used a balanced attack to score from the air and the ground and its solid defense frustrated the Jaguars.

Quarterback Jackson Pavitt threw for two touchdowns and completed 13 of 18 passes for 259 yards. He added another touchdown on the ground.

Receiver Chauncey Leberthon gathered in a 25-yard pass from Pavitt just three minutes into the game to give Newman a 7-0 advantage. Leberthon ended with 113 receiving yards on five catches.

Shane Moran scored on two rushing plays, on 2- and 4-yard scores, and caught a 32-yard pass from Pavitt. Running back Clay Woo carried for 12 times for 74 yards and one touchdown.

Kicker Matt Neilson was perfect on all his point-after attempts and hit a 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Nick Landeros gave Windsor its only score with a 55-yard touchdown run in the third.

Ukiah 32, Analy 0

The host Wildcats shut out the Tigers in an NBL-Oak game that keeps Ukiah tied with Rancho Cotate in second place in the division.

Ukiah's Lucas Stanley scored two rushing touchdowns, while Jay Escamilla added another and quarterback Nate Johnson threw for two - to Andrew Aikman and Riley Rohrbaugh.

The win gives the Wildcats a 6-2 mark overall and 2-1 in the NBL-Oak. Analy falls to 3-5 and 1-2.
