Firefighters in southern Lake County spent Sunday strengthening control lines around the nearly 4,000-acre Clayton fire - now 95 percent contained - and assisting residents returning to their homes in the Lower Lake area.

Damage inspection teams continued to survey the area scorched by the fire that erupted Aug. 13 to determine property loss, Cal Fire said Sunday night.

The latest tally showed 189 homes, eight commercial buildings and 102 other structures, such as sheds and outbuildings, had been destroyed.

There were no evacuations or road closures in effect.

Cal Fire said 1,216 personnel were still involved, along with 12 bulldozers and six helicopters.

Damin Pashilk, 40, of Clearlake, has been charged with setting a dozen blazes, including the Clayton fire, over the past year.
