CPUC holds last public forum on AT&T request to drop landline service. Here’s how to comment

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) held its last public forum on Telecom giant AT&T’s request to back out of its obligation to provide landline service to Californians Tuesday.

A complete recap of the hearing will appear in Thursday’s Press Democrat but is available now at pressdemocrat.com.

AT&T’s request has generated a wave of alarm from communities, advocacy groups and officials. Rural residents and their representatives in particular have raised concerns about the potential future implications, including for public safety, for those who are in areas without reliable alternatives through cell or internet service.

Previous public input sessions were held in-person in Clovis, Ukiah and Indio. Tuesday’s was conducted virtually.

Anyone can submit written comments at any point and read comments from others on the CPUC website at apps.cpuc.ca.gov/c/A2303003.

Up next, the CPUC will hold an evidentiary hearing in April, and a proposed decision is expected in September.
