A 57-year-old Garberville man died in a head-on crash on Highway 101

Saturday, and the driver of the car that slammed into his vehicle was

arrested, the CHP reported.

David Witherspoon, 57, was killed in the 10:30 a.m. accident south of

Garberville in southern Humboldt County.

The CHP said Jedediah Perimutter, 29, may have been going too fast down the

Benbow Grade in light rainy conditions, and was unable to control his 1994

Infiniti. His car crossed over into the northbound lanes, striking

Witherspoon's 1985 Mercedes Benz.

Perimutter sustained minor injuries and did not require medical attention.

He was booked into Humboldt County Jail on suspicion of manslaughter.

Alcohol was not involved, according to authorities.
