One man was killed and two others were in critical condition Thursday after an argument ended in a stabbing and shooting in the early morning in Santa Rosa, authorities said.

At about 1:50 a.m., the Santa Rosa Police Department received a call from the Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa that three men with stab wounds had been dropped off at the hospital, said Sgt. Christopher Mahurin, a police spokesperson.

By the time police arrived, the vehicle that dropped off the three men was gone, Mahurin said.

A man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the hospital and the other two, who are in their 20s and 30s, have life-threatening injuries. Police believe all three were stabbed, and at least one of them was shot, but are still trying to determine the extent of the injuries on all three, Mahurin said.

Investigators determined that about 10 minutes before the victims arrived at the hospital, they had been involved in argument with “an unknown number of suspects” at the intersection of Mendocino Avenue and Carrillo Street in northeast Santa Rosa. The argument turned fatal when the suspects began stabbing and shooting the victims, according to police.

It doesn’t appear the parties knew each other and investigators are trying to determine why they were all at the intersection, Mahurin added Thursday evening.

Around 2:10 a.m., officers who arrived at the scene found shell casings and blood, Mahurin said.

Police are looking into whether the killing was gang related, Mahurin said.

More details on the stabbing will be released once available and no additional information about the weapons will be released at this time, he said.

Authorities will release the name of the dead man once next of kin has been notified. They will not be releasing names of the men injured, according to a news release from the department.

Officers did not yet have a description of the suspects, but are asking anyone with surveillance footage or who witnessed to the incident to call the Violent Crimes Unit at 707-543-3590.

A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspects involved in this homicide, according to the department in a news release. The reward money come from the Sonoma County Alliance Community Engagement and Safety Rewards Fund.

Mendocino Avenue between College Avenue and Benton Street was shut down for about an hour after a patrol vehicle at the stabbing scene was hit by an “uninvolved and non-DUI” driver, Mahurin said.

Just before 4 a.m., a Santa Rosa man was going south in a Honda Civic when he broadsided the police SUV that was blocking the road. An officer was inside the SUV and treated for minor injuries.

The driver was not arrested.

By 9 a.m. Thursday, there was no police presence at the intersection. Home and business owners weren’t available to comment to a Press Democrat reporter.

The street was reopened by about 6 a.m., according to a CivicReady alert.

It is the second fatal stabbing in Santa Rosa in two weeks.

On Jan. 25, a 22-year-old man, who has not yet been identified by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, was fatally stabbed in a southwest Santa Rosa convenience store parking lot.

Police suspect he was targeted by three members of one Santa Rosa family, an adult and two teenagers, who were arrested on suspicion of murder.

There were 19 homicides in Sonoma County last year, and 12 of them took place in Santa Rosa. Three of the Santa Rosa victims were linked to murder-suicides.
