Skip Brand, owner of Healdsburg Running Co., has teamed up with Olympian Jeff Galloway and Anna and Al Meyers of the Sonoma County Galloway Training Program to help Healdsburg get fitter faster.

Galloway, who ran the 10,000 meters race in the 1972 Olympics and was an alternate in the marathon, has continued to train people with his “Run Walk Run” fitness program that is said to minimize injuries while helping those who have not exercised in many years develop a running regimen.

Galloway Sonoma County is based at the Healdsburg Running Co.'s store at 333 Center St. The store has set a goal to make Healdsburg one of the healthiest towns in the nation.

At 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, Galloway will lead the Running Co.'s fun run. He will follow up with a clinic at the store at 7 p.m. Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend the free event. Current participants range in age from their early 20s to the mid-70s.

“I'm against puking, pain and death,” Galloway said. “Running and walking turn on brain circuits for vitality, attitude and personal empowerment, but you don't have to kill yourself getting fit.”

Galloway is the official training consultant for RunDisney. He is also a columnist for a running magazine and author of the best-selling “Galloway's Book on Running.”

Both the Meyerses and Galloway focus on injury prevention, posture and form. They do a fitness survey for each person they train.

The Meyerses got involved as trainers with Galloway after taking the program and finding it a life-changing process, they said. They have lived in Healdsburg for 22 years. They train five local groups, as well as one through Kaiser Permanente.

Prices for their training range from $89-$129, depending on the length of the program. Current programs run from 16-26 weeks. Alumni members get price breaks on subsequent programs. Each participant receives a shirt, book, coaching and a training book as part of the program.
