Santa Rosa bicyclist remains hospitalized after crash

An injured bicyclist remained hospitalized Monday after crashing while riding on Bicentennial Way the day before.

Initial reports by Santa Rosa police said the crash was the result of a hit-and-run but amended the assessment after further investigation.

The 5 p.m. wreck Sunday involved just the westbound cyclist, who may have struck something in his path, causing him to lose control, said Santa Rosa traffic Officer Ken Ferrigno.

Jason Stevens, 35, landed along the roadway near Mendocino Avenue and hit his head, also suffering face and body scrapes and an eye injury, Ferrigno said. He was not wearing a helmet.

Stevens told officers he’d been riding on the sidewalk and then crossed to the bike lane just before he went down. Stevens didn’t recall being struck from behind and his bike’s front wheel was broken. There were no skid marks or other signs of a vehicle, Ferrigno said.
