Santa Rosa police detectives noticed a suspicious online advertisement for a mountain bike and wound up recovering an $8,000 bicycle stolen from the Railroad Square area and arresting a 28-year-old Santa Rosa man in connection with the theft.

Posing as potential buyers, detectives contacted the person who placed the ad and arranged to look at the bike, Sgt. Josh Ludtke said in a press release Tuesday.

Based on information from the advertisement and conversations with the suspect on Monday, investigators determined the Specialized brand bike was likely taken by someone who cut a bicycle lock and removed a bicycle from a rack on a vehicle several months ago, Ludtke said.

After detaining the suspect, detectives learned that he had a rented storage unit in Santa Rosa where the bike was found. The bicycle’s owner was advised that his ride had been found.

Tyler Grant Peter Boyd was arrested Monday on suspicion of possessing stolen property, possessing a controlled substance and a probation violation. He was released from Sonoma County Jail after posting $6,000 bail.
