Chateau St. Jean reopens after fires

Chateau St. Jean winery reopened its grounds and tasting rooms on Saturday after crews cleaned up the Sonoma Valley winery in the aftermath of last month’s devastating fires.

The winery, owned by Treasury Wine Estates, suffered only minor damage to an outbuilding along with cosmetic and landscaping damage from the Nuns fire. The facility is one of the most scenic and historic wineries in Sonoma County and was at one time host of the Sonoma Harvest Wine Auction.

The tasting room hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wine Market Council taps new leader

The Wine Market Council has named Steve Burns as its new president, replacing John Gillespie, who held the position for the past two decades at the nonprofit trade association that specializes in consumer research trends.

Gillespie will retire at the end of the month.

Burns was most recently the owner of Sonoma-based O’donnell Lane, a marketing and strategic planning firm for associations. He served as the executive director of the Washington Wine Commission from 1996 to 2004. He started his career in the industry in 1990 as the international marketing manager at the Wine Institute, the trade group that represents California wineries. From 1984 to 1989, Burns was special assistant to then Gov. George Deukmejian, working with the state’s international trade office.

Training on cork taint offered

Enartis USA will offer training Friday to winery workers to help them determine their sensory threshold to the chemical that triggers cork taint: 2,4,6-Trichloroanisole, more commonly known as TCA.

The company said the 45-minute sessions will provide cellar crews and tasting room staff the opportunity to see how well they can identify TCA-tainted wines.

The fee is $100 per person. It will be held at the company’s facility located at 7975 Cameron Drive, Building 1800, in Windsor.
