Photo show on African women opens in Sonoma

“Kara Women Speak,” an exhibit of Glen Ellen photographer Jane Baldwin’s pictures and film from her decade of travels through the Omo River Valley in Africa, opens Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art.

Since 2005, Baldwin has made annual trips to southwestern Ethiopia and northwestern Kenya, documenting the lives of the women of the Kara tribe and other tribes.

The exhibit will include audio interviews with the women and video of Baldwin’s work with them, plus artifacts and a short film. The show runs through Dec. 6 at the museum at 551 Broadway in downtown Sonoma.

Baldwin will speak at the museum on her project at 3 p.m. Sept. 26, and will return for a panel discussion with other photographers at 3 p.m. Nov. 7. Admission costs $15 at each of these events.

Regular museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Admission: $5, or $8 per family; free students age 18 or younger. Information: svma.org, 707-939-7862,
