We're all used to hearing quirky band names by now, but the moniker chosen by folk trio I'm With Her is not only clever, but accurate and apt.

When Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O'Donovan sing in harmony, it's hard to imagine how they could be any more together. Their three voices sound almost like one voice, yet much richer in texture.

Now touring in support of their debut album, “See You Around,” released last month, the group will perform Wednesday, April 4, at Santa Rosa's Luther Burbank Center. Their Tuesday show at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco is already sold out.

Although the three singers are on their first album tour this year, their first live performance together dates back to an impromptu appearance during the summer of 2014 in Telluride, Colorado.

“We've all had solo careers, and we've known each other for years, but there was a moment when we found ourselves onstage together, and we were doing triple harmonies,” Sara Watkins, who doubles as the group's fiddler, said in a recent phone interview.

The following year, the trio began touring the world.

“For whatever reason, we tour together really well,” Watkins said. “It certainly helps that we've been playing together for the last few years before making this record.”

Individually, each of the threesome has amassed an impressive list of credits. Watkins, who now lives in Los Angeles, debuted in 1989 as a founding member of the progressive bluegrass group Nickel Creek and went on to release five studio albums, one compilation album and seven singles with the band.

She also has made three solo albums and has appeared on recordings by John Mayer and others, and toured with Jackson Browne in 2012 and 2013. Watkins performed on Garrison Keillor's “Prairie Home Companion” radio and touring variety series, both as a soloist and with Nickel Creek, including his final show at the Hollywood Bowl in 2016.

Singer and guitarist O'Donovan, born of Irish ancestry with an Irish name (Aoife is pronounced “Eefa”) and raised in Boston, first came to national prominence singing with the progressive bluegrass band Crooked Still.

Now based in Brooklyn, she toured in support of her solo album, “The Magic Hour,” two years ago, including a stop at Petaluma's Mystic Theatre, She also toured with Keillor's “Prairie Home Companion” show, in 2013 and again last summer.

Mandolinist Jarosz, originally from Austin, Texas, made album debut in 2009 with “Song Up in Her Head,” which included the Grammy Award-nominated tune “Mansinneedof.” She released her fourth solo album, “Undercurrent,” in 2016.

While the threesome started out in their early performances by giving a new sound to other people's material, the trio's first trio album dives deeply into new territory. All but one of the songs are original.

“We started out doing a bunch of covers,” Watkins said, “but we got together and wrote songs in Los Angeles and then again in Vermont.”

All three play guitar, with Watkins also playing fiddle and ukulele, Jarosz on fiddle and banjo and O'Donovan on synthesizer and piano. The album also expanded on the three musicians' mostly acoustic sound.

“On the album, in the credits, there are several electric instruments, and there's a pump organ,” Watkins said. “We definitely have played acoustic instruments primarily … but there were instruments around the studio that we could just grab.”

Fans can expect a lot more from the trio, Watkins predicted.

“We're going to being touring this album for a long time, for the foreseeable future,” she said. “I think we're committed to I'm With Her, and to go on with it as a career. This is a priority right now. I'm sure we'll keep doing this in the future. I don't want to think we've reached our full potential already.”
