Dad of Bay Area '13 Reasons Why' fan who committed suicide slams Selena Gomez

Sonoma County has recently been abuzz with celebrity sightings due to the filming of Netflix's popular "13 Reasons Why" in Sebastopol.

Now, the show's executive producer, singer-actress Selena Gomez is the subject of a different kind of buzz following the suicide of a 15-year-old Bay Area fan after binge-watching the show.

John Herndon, a father from Livermore, whose daughter, Bella, hung her herself in her closet after watching the show, had some choice words for Gomez.

In an interview with RadarOnline, Herndon said, “I'm still completely disgusted. Selena makes me sick.”

Herndon went on to say, “She is an extremely disturbed individual to think that this show has any kind of redeeming social value at all.”

Last week, Gomez celebrated wrapping-up the filming of the show with an Instagram post, expressing her pride for being a part of a show that is, “committed to having the tough conversations, to telling the story that can start change.”

Herndon and his wife, Donna, rushed their daughter to the hospital after discovering her in her closet on April 18. The teen died 10 days later.

The Herndon's daughter battled with depression and it wasn't until after the funeral that her parents found out that she had binge-watched the show before taking her own life.

“Remember that there are teens out there that are in a little darker place and these could be your friends, your sisters,” Herndon said. “Selena Gomez and Netflix need to understand that not everybody's going to understand this very well. Some people who are battling with depression, this could catch them at the wrong time, creating what is called the trigger event.”

Herndon went on to tell RadarOnline that if he could, he would sue everyone involved in the show.

“Suing a billion-dollar company like Netflix is not within my means right now unless there are other like-minded individuals that want to engage collectively together to bring a suit against them,” Herndon said.

Gomez was also recently in the news following the viral video of Keaton Jones, speaking out about being bullied. Gomez recorded a video message of support for Jones.

Neither Gomez, her representatives or the show have responded to the Herndon family.
