Mendocino County man arrested on drug, gun charges

A young Hopland man went to jail after Mendocino County sheriff's deputies found him carrying drugs and possessing a stolen handgun, officials reported Monday.

He was arrested after his father reported the gun stolen Saturday night and told deputies he was concerned for his son, saying he hadn't slept in days, sheriff's officials reported.

A report was issued to area law enforcement about the young man and the Mercedes he was driving.

James A. Whetstone, 19, was stopped late Saturday night by Hopland Tribal Police officers on Highway 175 near the reservation.

Officers found 50 tablets of an illegal drug known as "ecstasy" hidden in a panel in the car's trunk, officials said. Whetstone led deputies to the stolen .45-caliber gun.

He was arrested on suspicion of grand theft and possession of illegal drugs for sale.

He was booked into Mendocino County Jail.
