SUSPECT STILL AT LARGE AFTER STABBING

Sonoma County sheriff's deputies Wednesday night were looking for the suspect in a stabbing that took place inside a house west of Santa Rosa, across from two schools.

The victim, Alan Evans, 35, was taken by ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with wounds to his neck and wrist, and the two schools were briefly locked down while authorities secured the area.

Lt. Steve Brown said Evans suffered stab and slash wounds "all over his body" but was expected to survive.

It wasn't clear late Wednesday what the attack was about, Brown said, but it appeared that Evans was defending himself. Detectives were expecting to speak with Evans after he underwent surgery Wednesday evening.

Several people called 911 to report seeing a bloody man walking on Hall Road around 1:50 p.m.

Evans, who apparently rents a room in the house, told deputies he was injured by a man inside the house, on the southeast corner of Hall and Willowside roads.

No weapon has been recovered, and it is unknown why Evans crossed the street after the attack. At the time of the incident, the two men were the only people in the house, Brown said. Earlier, a woman and a child had left.

The scene is across Hall Road from Willowside Middle School and Summerfield Waldorf School, which were locked down to keep children and staff safe.

The alert was lifted about 30 minutes later, and a line of parents' cars waited to pick up their middle schoolers after the 2:15 p.m. bell.

Deputies were seeking a man who is believed to have driven away from the scene.

A woman who said she is Evans' mother said the suspect was an unwelcome visitor to the house. The man is known to the family and had been asked to leave the house before, she said.

Deputies, who did not identify the suspect, continued to investigate Wednesday evening. A bloody T-shirt lay in the driveway, and a trail of blood led to Hall Road. Deputies had taped off the southeast corner of the intersection, but traffic was allowed to pass on Hall Road.
