A Mercedes SUV backing up in Sonoma’s U.S. Post Office parking lot at 617 Broadway inadvertently struck a young boy racing to return to his car on Wednesday afternoon.

Multiple 911 calls were made to the Sonoma Police following the incident, which occurred at 1:19 p.m. on May 15.

Witnesses reported that, as the car was backing up from a parking space, a 3-year-old boy behind the vehicle was struck. It’s unclear if the boy fell as a result of being struck by the car or not, but he suffered moderate but not life-threatening injuries when the car ran over his hand, according to Sgt. Mike Baraz of Sonoma Police.

Sonoma Valley Fire & Rescue responded with an ambulance which took the boy to Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, accompanied by his mother.

The woman driving the SUV was cooperating with police, and neither drugs nor alcohol is suspected.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is encouraged to contact Deputy Tim Salyers at the Sonoma Police Department, at 996-3602. Reference case 19-0000525.
