A 23-year-old Santa Rosa man with a past felony conviction was arrested Thursday after gang crimes investigators found a handgun and ammunition during a search of his Hearn Avenue home Thursday, authorities said.

Josue Hernandez was briefly jailed and later released with a date to appear in court for suspicion of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by an ex-felon, Santa Rosa police said.

Police described the gun as a “large caliber revolver” and said they also found “several rounds of handgun ammunition.”

Officials were not available to say what it was that prompted gang investigators to obtain a search warrant for Hernandez’s home near Dutton Avenue, but said in a news release that they are “committed to reducing violence in our city.”

Hernandez was arrested and taken to the Sonoma County jail, but was released after posting bail, jail personnel said.

He was scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 27.
