EDITOR: Measure B on the June ballot would add another $49 per $100,000 of assessed value to property taxes for homeowners in the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District. This is in addition to the $89 per year parcel tax passed in 2012.
Several things bother me with all of this:
Why didn't Measure D make school safety a priority instead of "protecting" art, music and vocational education programs? Poor priority setting?
A campaign flier refers to homeowners as a "new source of locally controlled funding." Disturbing.
Are homeowners to expect a measure for every crisis du-jour in our schools? This is two election cycles in a row. Are homeowners the new cash cow?
Non-homeowners are voting on homeowner impact issues. That's not fair.
I implore you to get informed on what you are voting on. Don't blindly vote yes because it's for our schools, police or fire. Vote because it makes sense, and it's the right thing to do. We must hold our elected officials fiscally responsible because it's looking like they can't or won't do it themselves.
