Joe Hamer takes on the Globes

Joe Hamer, Petaluma's own hairstylist to the stars, returned from his first trip Golden Globe Awards and took some time out to share what he sees as what's hot and what's not.

Hamer, owner of The Joe Hamer Salon and Academy, worked the awards as global artistic director for hair product company Leonor Greyl, advising some of Hollywood's biggest stars how they should wear their hair on and off the red carpet.

At the Globes, 40-year-old Hamer met with such stars as Anna Ortiz of "Ugly Betty," Masi Oka of "Heroes" and Lance Bass.

His favorites were not, in fact, Hollywood A-listers at all, but the children in attendance from Make-A-Wish Foundation, "That was my choice. I just felt like that's where my heart is. I'm a homeboy now from Petaluma and it's all about being from the heart," he said.

At the Globes, he predicted the "Romantic Curl" to be the hairstyle of choice, it was. He also predicted a lot of white dresses (there were) and smooth hair. Right again.

In addition to the Globes, he's just returned from trips to New York and Europe and here's what he sees:

What's hot in '07: "Everyone's going to wear it: Two layers and they're influenced by the early 80's, kind of layery, almost like a Farrah Fawcett, but cleaner in detail with the layers. '81, '82 are hot right now."

What's not: "Do not perm your hair. Don't confuse that with that lazy curl."

New salon trend: "People are coming, they'll wash their hair, they'll set their hair and they'll wear it for a few days like that. Curly hair is huge, it's a set, it's not a perm. A lot people are mistaking what they see on the red carpet or in the magazines as a perm. In reality, it's a set.

In Petaluma: "I love Peet's coffee in the morning. It's a great pick up. It's literally a block away from our salon. But, then in the afternoon and I need something a little calmer, I'll go to The Apple Box and have my lunch and a lighter coffee. I love their food because they are so health conscious there. Water Street Bistro is also amazing."
