'Zombie Bandit' sentenced to 17 years in prison

MEDFORD, Ore. - A 69-year-old California man nicknamed the "Zombie Bandit" after starting his bank robbery career in the Midwest in the 1990s has been sentenced to more than 17 years in federal prison.

Alan David Hurwitz of Orleans, was sentenced Tuesday for committing an armed bank robbery in Medford and three additional robberies in Santa Rosa, San Rafael and Palo Alto in December 2008.

He was arrested in January 2009 by the Wyoming Highway Patrol while traveling on the freeway near Laramie.

Hurwitz was previously convicted in 1994 and 1995 for committing 10 armed bank robberies in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and Indiana.
