Barn dance at Green String Farm

Barn Dance! On Friday night: Green String Farm hosts the Heifer International Barn Dance and Dinner from 5 to 9 p.m.

A simple dinner of chili, cornbread and salad will be served, with cookies for dessert and beer, wine, apple juice and sodas to drink.

There will be a presentation of the work of Heifer International, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to ending poverty and hunger and nurturing the planet.

The dance features Celia Ramsay, singer, songwriter, traditional vocalist and dance caller; she will be bringing musicians, including a fiddler, with her.

And it all takes place in a real barn. This old-fashioned fete tops the list for weekend events. How can you resist a dance caller? Shake out those old petticoats, find your trusty bolo ties and join the fun.

Cost is $30 per person, $20 of which is tax deductible. Kids 12 and older may attend with their parents.

Online ticket purchases have closed but you can pay at the door.

Green String Farm is at 3571 Old Adobe Road in northeast Petalulma.

The Whole Hog, Petaluma-Puerto Rico Style: Tara Firma Farms in Petaluma is hosting its first Memorial Day Pig Roast on Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m.

It's an old-fashioned farm fete, with Tara Firma's Shane Valentine providing the pasture-raised pig, roasted over an open fire, and guests bringing their favorite side dishes to share.

Guests should also bring plates, flatware and something to drink.

The pig, prepared Puerto-Rican-style, will be ready by 7 p.m. but there will plenty to do before then, including live music and simply hanging out.

Cost is $25 per person if you are over 12 and free if you are under. Attendance is limited to just 135 guests so if you want to snag one of the last seats, do it quick at tarafirmafarms.com, where you can also sign up to be a Pig Captain, which includes special privileges and a special hat.

Tara Firm Farms is located at 3796 I Street Extension but don't just show up. Advance reservations are essential.

It's Oysterpalooza Time!: On Sunday, Rocker Oysterfellers Kitchen + Saloon hosts the Fifth Annual Oysterpalooza celebration of our favorite bivalve.

A food court in the restaurant's garden will be serving seafood gumbo, oyster and shrimp po' boys, Texas-style brisket, red beans and rice and barbecued Tomales Bay Oysters.

Da Puna Bruddahs will offer entertainment Hawaiian-style the following Sunday, June 3.

The Wishing Tree: This Saturday, Sunday and Monday is the final opportunity this season to enjoy a garden party at the Russian River Rose Company.

This little oasis of beauty will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the holiday weekend.

You can enjoy a cup of tea in the garden, sit and sip under a swirl of butterflies and hummingbirds and breath in the sweet perfume of hundreds of roses.

If you wish, you can write a note (paper is provided) and tie it to a special tree with a pretty ribbon, where it will wave in the breezes with hundreds of others hanging from the Memorial Wishing Tree.

We were touched by the sight last year. The town of Calistoga has several similar trees installed downtown.

There is no charge but a $2 donation per person will help cover costs. Please leave pups and picnics at home.

The Russian River Rose Company is located at 1685 Magnolia Dr., Healdsburg. For more information and specific directions, visit russian-river-rose.com.

Redwood Empire Farmers Market: Last week, when we announced the opening of a new farmers market at the Santa Rosa Veterans Building, we identified Cindy Holland as the market's manager.

That is not the case. Holland is the market's business manager.

Currently, there is no market manager. Market-day duties - collecting stall fees, checking certifications and checking load lists - are currently being handled primarily by Rob Cary, president of the board, though it was Holland who was on duty on opening day.

A search is currently underway for part-time managers. According to Cary, the new organization hopes to hire two or three individuals who will rotate Saturday shifts. Managerial duties will be limited to market days.

Michele Anna Jordan hosts "Mouthful" each Sunday at 7 p.m. on KRCB 90.9 & 91.1 FM. E-mail Jordan at michele@micheleannajordan.com. You'll find her blog, "Eat This Now," at pantry.blogs.pressdemocrat.com.
