BETTENCOURT, Don 1934-2014 Don Bettencourt-Retired Police Lieutenant

BETTENCOURT, Don 1934-2014 Don Bettencourt-Retired Police Lieutenant Donald Leroy Bettencourt died peacefully at home on April 15, 2014. Don was born in Oakland, Calif., to his late parents, Joseph Bettencourt and Frances Armstrong. Don moved to the valley as a young boy and had lived in Sonoma for the past 70 years. When Don was a Boy Scout he attended the groundbreaking at Hanna Boys Center in 1948, and as a teenager he was a busboy and dishwasher for the Sonoma Mission Inn. At age 21 Don met the love of his life, Kay Tallman, and then joined The National Guard for six years and left as an E-5 Sgt. Don worked at The Plywood Factory while in The National Guard as well as helping out Duggan's and Norrbom's Ambulance from time to time. Don and Kay married and started their family then he became a Reserve Officer for The Sonoma Police Dept. A year later he became a full-time officer and retired as a Police Lieutenant in 1990. After wearing a uniform for 30 years, he could often be seen in a hunting outfit, a 49er or his most favorite tie-dye t-shirt. Don was quite the outdoors man and had other hobbies as well: hunting, camping, golfing, fishing, and being the best grandpa. Don was probably one of the biggest 49er fans you will ever meet. There are no words to express how Don was such a loving and caring husband to his late wife Kay Bettencourt and father to his late son, Steve Bettencourt (Kari) and his daughters, Caryn Bettencourt (Brad) and Kathy Bettencourt, and grandfather to Jason Menefee (Jamie) and Kyndra Menefee (Austin), and great-grandfather to Brooklyn Menefee. Don also leaves behind some close relatives as well as Joy Stovall and her family and friends, but most of all to his Angel (caregiver) Eddie who always called him Sir. Thank you, Daddy, for giving us the most humbling last six months and thanks for the last kiss and smile...and we will always remember to never turn our backs on the ocean...we will miss you! Friends are invited to attend a celebration of life on Saturday May 31, 2014 at 11.00 at Hannah Boys Center, 1700 Arnold Drive, Sonoma. Any donations may be made to Hanna Boys Center. Arrangements under the direction of Duggan's Mission Chapel.

CASS, Joyce P. April 30, 1926 - April 7, 2014

CASS, Joyce P. April 30, 1926 - April 7, 2014 Resident of Santa Rosa. Joyce left for her next journey and new adventure in the early morning of April 7. She was ready to move on and welcomed the change of scenery. It was almost perfect. She had lived a full and happy life. She loved to travel, write, entertain, shop, play scrabble, tennis and ping pong. She also enjoyed the finer things in life like sterling silver, the symphony and plays, but she could be whimsical at times too. She was animated and full of fun stories. She relished her early childhood years growing up in the Presidio Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. She was a conscientious citizen, an interested friend and an endlessly supportive parent. She and her second husband happily shared the challenges of life for 47 years together. They built houses in North Star and Sea Ranch and wined and dined the years away. She leaves behind four children - Tim, Debby, Jill and Polly, eight grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and a bevy of friends. Our hearts are heavy and she will be sorely missed. Farewell for now, until we meet up again. I'm sure she'd agree with this quote from her favorite San Francisco columnist Herb Caen, "One day if I do go to heaven... I'll look around and say, "It ain't bad, but it ain't San Francisco." The family would like to thank the Wellness Center at Varenna and Memorial Hospice of Santa Rosa for their kindness and loving care. A special thanks also goes out to Mom's extraordinary friends at Varenna who selflessly cared for Mom as her health began to decline. Private services will follow. If your heart desires, please donate to Memorial Hospice in lieu of flowers.

CODDING, Sandra Marie

CODDING, Sandra Marie Born February 15, 1944 in Santa Rosa. Sandi died unexpectedly at her home in Santa Rosa early April 17, 2014. She was daughter of the late Arthur B. and Barbara Siri. Sandi is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, James Codding; and her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Mike Owen. She was the beloved grandmother of Matthew, Bradley and Molly Owen, and Sara, Rachael, Michael, Andrew, Ben and Danielle Codding. Sandi was step-mother to Jim, Jr., Nancy and Peter Codding (Michelle). She is also survived by her brother, Arthur Siri, Jr. (Lois), brother-in-law Dick Codding (Elaine), Godchildren Vicki (Siri) Gentery, Stacey LaFave, and Markus Wilson, along with many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews. Sandi was preceded in death by her brother, Bruce Siri, and by the tragic loss of three of her children, Stacey, Cameron and Mitchell Clay, who died in a plane accident in 1980. This left a big hole in her life. She privately carried the burden of that very painful and horrific loss valiantly the rest of her life. The Siri family has a long history of living in Santa Rosa. Sandi's parents moved here the day after the Golden Gate Bridge was built. At one point five generations of Sandi's immediate family lived in Santa Rosa, including Sandi's grandmother, mother, daughter and two grandsons. Her father Art Siri, was the largest paving contractor in Northern California. She was proud of the fact that she graduated in 1962 with the first graduating class that attended all four years at the then-new Ursuline High School on Ursuline Road. In 2012, she received her "Golden Diploma" from Ursuline for her 50th high school reunion. Sandi was well-known for her great cooking and entertaining skills. She had many beautiful summer backyard parties at their home. Over the years she generously hosted a number of non-profit events, garden tours and home tours, weddings, and bridal and baby showers at her former Midway Drive home. She volunteered for and financially contributed to many worthy causes. She served on the Codding Foundation for many years, and was an active member of the board for the Sonoma County Museum for a number of years. Raised in a close Italian family with many family traditions, she tried to carry them on for her children and grandchildren. She was a caring and wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. She made all the holidays and many birthday parties very special for her family. She had a keen fashion sense. For many years she modeled in fashion shows for Rose Red, Joseph Magnin and a number of other organizations and stores. She was part-owner of Rafinee in Montgomery Village, along with Nel Codding and a few other good friends. They brought high-fashion clothing to Sonoma County. She would travel to New York several times each year on buying trips for the store. Sandi had a great sense of humor; she was very animated and known for her fabulous story-telling skills. She also enjoyed pilates at Tone, going on walks with friends, decorating, cooking, entertaining, Sonoma Valley wine-tasting, shopping trips to San Francisco, and playing mahjong and bunco. In her younger years, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting and needlepoint. She was proud of being both a Cub Scout den mother and Brownie Troop leader for her children. She also snow skied with the Santa Rosa Ski Club and played bridge at that time. A member of Wild Oak Saddle Club, she frequently attended events there. She loved to attend brunches at the club and watch the polo matches. She was an active member on the Social Committee for the Wild Oak Villages Community. Always interested in history, theater and current events, she regularly attended lectures at Sonoma State on these topics. Sandi and Jim enjoyed many years in their second home in Scottsdale, AZ from 1998 till 2010. She played some golf, went on long desert walks with her friends, entertained many Santa Rosans as houseguests, and enjoyed the great shopping and restaurants there. She was a true world traveler. She and Jim traveled to locations throughout the U.S., Europe, Russia, seven African Safaris, Canada, Mexico and many other interesting places. Sandi and Jim attended the inauguration of Ronald Reagan in 1985 and were invited to a State Dinner at the White House in 1981 with President and Mrs. Reagan in honor of the King and Queen of Spain. Sandi had a terrific time celebrating her 70th birthday, hosted by her daughter Nancy, with close friends and family in February of this year. Friends are invited to attend a Liturgy Service on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Star of the Valley Church in Oakmont, 545 White Oak Dr, Santa Rosa, CA 95409. Private interment will be near her three late children at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Santa Rosa. In Sandi's memory donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 93 Stony Circle, Santa Rosa, CA 95401. Daniel's Chapel of the Roses 525-3730

CRONIN, NEIL 1963-2014

CRONIN, NEIL 1963-2014 A gracious human being was taken from us when Neil Cronin passed away on Good Friday April 18, 2014. Per the Irish proverb, he went straight to heaven. Neil always did try to plan. He was an Eagle Scout you know. Neil was born and raised in Ridgewood New Jersey. He migrated to the town of Steamboat Springs Colorado (only the #4 listed Best Small Town) where he met a gal named Val. She wore a strapless dress and they got married in 1995. They moved to the #2 Best Small Town (Healdsburg California) where they had a daughter, Hannah Mae in 1999. Besides being the owner of John & Zeke's, Neil contributed in other ways to our community. As a BBQ king, he donated dinners for St John's Catholic School and other fundraisers. Neil also supported and even sang bass a few times in the Healdsburg Community Chorus. He coached pole vaulting at Healdsburg High and also crazily participated in the Raven's Dancing with the Stars fundraiser. Neil didn't win but it was a blast! Every Christmas, Neil would dress as Santa Claus and make the Cronin Christmas Classic golf tournament happen. We golfed rain, sun or mud and always had a good time. Winning a can of Spam wasn't so bad and all proceeds went to the Boys & Girls' club, Neil's special cause. To all of Neil's friends, we know you will never forget him. To his wife Val, you have been robbed of future wedding anniversaries but it's better to have been with him 20 years than none. For Hannah Mae, you know he was a great dad. He was very proud of you. Neil is survived by his sisters, Kerry Cronin (Steven Mills), Kristin Cronin, his sister-in-law Rachel Coons, his in-laws James and Angela Coons and a huge loving East Coast family. Thanks to the framily (you know who you are), the meal train, hospice, Sutter Oncology, the Healdsburg community, Camp Timbuktu from the Bohemian Grove, Dr. Brett, Pat Grinell, Cathy, Aura, JP, Cheryl, Jane, Brianna, Jamie, and Nancy. Special thanks to Dr. Locke Wilson, Linda, Catherine and Margo. It was a tough road made easier by you. A Vigil will be held in Neil's honor Thursday May 1st at 7 p.m. at St John's Catholic Church in Healdsburg. Service will be the next day Friday May 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at St John's Catholic Church. If you'd like to make a donation, please make it a good one that's close to your heart or think about giving back in some way. Neil would be pleased.

MARTINELLI, Betty Jean 04/13/1930 - 04/14/2014

MARTINELLI, Betty Jean 04/13/1930 - 04/14/2014 "Betty Jean", as her husband Evo fondly called her, passed 04/14/2014. Betty was born in Wichita, Kansas, 1930, on a productive Dairy Farm; Ark Valley Jersey Farm, E. L. Reep and Sons. Betty was in the high school chorus as the only "whistler". Betty won the "Whistling Contest" one year at the Kansas State Fair. She graduated from high school and married her high school sweetheart, Dale Osburn. Their son, Jon was born in Wichita. The family moved to Sharpe Park, CA in the early 1950's, then moved to Santa Rosa. Betty helped her husband with his painting business. Evo Martinelli and Betty married in 1964, blending two families. Betty worked at the florist shop, Senior Floral Arranger, in Montgomery Village for a number of years. Betty had a passion for gardening. Her vegetable garden and flower garden were the best in the neighborhood of St. Francis Acres, Santa Rosa. Betty enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, camping at Eagle Lake, water skiing at Lake Shasta, clamming, crabbing, picking wild mushrooms, gatherings at the Ranch, with her husband, family and friends. While working at Warrick Hospital in Admitting, Betty took many exciting vacations with Lynn Rothenberg. Betty retired from Warrick Hospital after 29 years of employment. Betty brought music to the large household. She played the pedal organ beautifully. Unfortunately, only Renee (daughter), Misty (daughter) and Betty could carry a tune or conquer a musical instrument. The family saw many plays in San Francisco with the Civic Light Opera. Rogers and Hammerstein musicals were to be heard on the reel to reel in the living room instead of television. Betty's everyday cooking skills lacked an edible direction; yet, the woman was a virtuoso at baking anything and everything. Halloween tradition, Betty would bake bread then fry it - what a TREAT! Thanksgiving brought homemade pies; pumpkin, and apple. Christmas was a flurry of baking homemade fudge, divinity, candy canes, cookies, sugar angels, cakes, and chocolate drops. Betty was a photographer. All occasions, any occasion, you would find her behind the Instamatic, or the Polaroid encouraging "Say something"....... "Mommmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......uuuggghhhhh". Look any direction and there she would be standing, in your face, with a smile and a camera. Knitting, crocheting, were favorite pastimes of Betty's. There was not an evening when one did not hear the clack-clack-clack of her knitting needles. JOKESeveryone who knew Betty heard a million jokes. She had a joke for all seasons. She was best at making fun of herself. As she would say "make fun of yourself before someone else makes fun of you". Betty's Golden Rules; Dinner at 6:00 p.m. every evening; being late to the table meant weeks of phone/television/in house restriction (I believe Dean (son) is still on restriction 45 years after the fact), beds made before leaving the house or be called back from the bus stop to make your bed, no slamming of doors or open and close the same door 100 times consecutively, no elbows on the table at mealtime unless you wanted a fork poke in the arm, bed sheets changed every Friday; boys sheets burned for the protection of humanity, no speaking while mouth is full of food, no phone calls after 8:00 p.m. Betty was the "Mrs. Beaver Cleaver Mom of 1950' - 60s, with an edge, usually with her apron on. After the death of her husband Evo, in 2002, Betty moved to Rockport, TX on Aransas Bay. She made many friends in Rockport where she continued fishing, enjoying her boat and feeding her Schnauzers bacon (wonder why the dogs died after hitting 30 pounds each). Betty will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Deepest thanks to Joan Marshall, the nurses at Gulf Pointe Skilled Nursing Home, and the Harbor Hospice angels in Rockport, TX. A special heartfelt "thank you so very much" to Ron Anderson who has participated in every aspect of "Mom", with love and patience for the last eight years. Betty was predeceased by her husband Evo Martinelli in 2002. Children; Theresa Martinelli-Jones and husband Robert, Jon Osburn and wife Vicki, Dean Martinelli, Renee' St Michael and husband Rick, Marianne "Misty" Martinelli Crowley and husband Peter.
