SSBL BOYS BASKETBALL: HAWKS' WIN TIGHTENS LEAGUE RACE

Thanks to strong rebounding from its big men and pesky defense from Tony Tovaraz, Archbishop Hanna's boys basketball team kept Summerfield Waldorf star Ilan Zur in check Thurday night. The Hawks' 56-51 win at home in Sonoma kept things interesting atop the Small School Bridge League standings.

Zur, a senior averaging 27.9 points and 10.8 rebounds a game on the season, was largely quiet in the second half before fouling out in the fourth quarter with 20 points, Hawks coach Courtney Jackson said.

Jackson said the 5-foot-11 Tovaraz chased Zur all night, helping contain the 6-foot-4 forward who scored 28 points in a 67-60 Summerfield Waldorf win over the Hawks on Jan. 12.

"Tony ... really put a number on Zur and just took him out of the game," Jackson said. Zur scored two points in the third quarter and only made two field goals in the final period.

Jackson also credited center Kendrick Davis (14 points, 13 rebounds) and power forward Armani Perry (16 points, nine rebounds) with being aggressive on the glass and denying the Mustangs second-chance points.

After splitting their season series with Summerfield Waldorf (14-6, 6-1), the Hawks (13-5, 6-2) need help from Rio Lindo Adventist (12-5, 6-1), which hosts Summerfield Waldorf on Jan. 30. The Spartans play at Archbishop Hanna on Feb. 7 to close out league play.
