Smith: How a sweet old Karmann Ghia will do good for homeless animals

What’s the most adorable thing to arrive as of late at the Sonoma Humane Society?

It’s a cute-as-a-bug, 1967 VW Karmann Ghia. A loyal supporter of the nonprofit’s ambitious works on behalf of homeless animals donated it, hoping the Humane Society would find a way to convert the car to dollars for services.

The agency now is selling Karmann Ghia raffle tickets for $100 each. The person whose ticket is drawn at the Humane Society’s “Wags, Whiskers and Wine” benefit gala on Aug. 14 at Geyserville’s Trentadue Winery will take home the classic car.

To buy a raffle ticket, stop by the Sonoma Humane Society on Highway 12 between Santa Rosa and Sebastopol, or visit sonomahumane.org.

Volunteer Nancy Hair is so doggedly determined to sell tickets she offers to home-deliver them to buyers living within 15 miles of the Humane Society. Just drop her a note at doghairnancy@yahoo.com.

Though it’d be priceless to see the face of the person whose ticket is drawn at the benefit, the winner won’t have to be present.
