A Vallejo man was arrested in Sonoma County on Monday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after coming close to hitting four other cars on Highway 101’s Cotati Grade, police said.

Joel Haner, 35, was arrested after witnesses called 911 at 10:43 a.m. about his erratic driving, Petaluma police said in a news release. One caller said Haner nearly drove off the road when exiting southbound 101 at the Petaluma Boulevard North/Old Redwood Highway offramp, police said.

Another witness told police he saw Haner nearly strike a telephone pole as he attempted to make a left turn onto Corona Road from Petaluma Boulevard North.

An officer stopped Haner farther east on Corona Road and arrested him after he “displayed extreme signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and extreme odor of alcohol,” according to police.
