Skateboarder struck and killed by SUV on rural road outside Santa Rosa
A male riding a skateboard on the right-hand shoulder of Fulton Road north of Santa Rosa Friday night was hit by the driver of a sport utility vehicle when the boarder swerved into the path of the motorist, CHP Sgt. Jason Bahlman said.
It was about 9:15 p.m. when the driver of a GMC Yukon struck the skateboarder near the intersection of Fulton and River roads, the CHP said. The skateboarder suffered major injuries and was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
“Our investigation revealed that for unknown reasons, the skateboarder suddenly veered directly into the path of the Yukon,” Bahlman said. “The driver was unable to avoid a collision.”
Bahlman said police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident. The driver, whose name police did not release, was cooperative. Although the investigation is ongoing, police said it’s unlikely the driver will face charges.
Traffic was also not a factor, Bahlman said.
“It was dark, but it’s a straight roadway. There was nothing unusual about the circumstances other than the skateboarder veering directly into the path of the Yukon,” Bahlman said.
Authorities were not able to identify the skateboarder and did not release an approximate age. Further investigation will be handled by the Sonoma County Coroner’s Office.
