A car crashed into a tree off northbound Highway 101 in Santa Rosa on Friday night, sending one person to the hospital and creating a large traffic jam, according to the CHP.

CHP received a call about the crash just north of the Mendocino Avenue offramp at 7:16 p.m., Officer Mark Johnston said. A car went off the roadway, hit a tree and caught on fire, Johnston said.

One person was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries, but it did not appear anyone was still in the car while it was on fire, Johnston said.

The crash shut down a northbound section of the highway, backing up traffic at one point to about Bicentennial Way in north Santa Rosa. The closed lane was open again at 9:11 p.m., according to the CHP.
