Impairment is suspected as a factor in the crash that killed a Santa Rosa teen and seriously injured his passenger early Sunday, according to the Highway Patrol.

Endrias Atlaw, 18, the driver of the 2004 Honda Civic that slammed into a tree on Highway 1 south of Bodega Bay, is suspected of driving under the influence, said Officer Jon Sloat.

Investigators said toxicology tests will determine whether he was intoxicated.

The car appeared “wrapped around a tree,” according to initial reports from witnesses to the crash just before 2 a.m. It was not clear how fast it was going when it left the road just north of Bay Hill Road and Estero Lane.

A passenger, Aleksandra Adamovna Ivanova, 18, Rohnert Park, was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with reported broken hip, broken ribs and other injuries.

She then was transferred to Stanford Hospital where she remained Wednesday being treated for several broken bones and other injuries, said her mother Svetlana Clark of Rohnert Park.
