A Santa Rosa family was jolted late Thursday when a car veered off the road, crashed through a fence and ran into their backyard, missing their house by about 25 feet.

Emergency crews were dispatched at about 11:35 p.m. to the report of a crash at Petaluma Hill Road near Crystal Hill Drive, Battalion Chief Matt Dahl said.

It appeared the woman driver ran off the road, struck a fire hydrant and a tree before careening through the fence, Dahl said.

Occupants of the house as well as neighbors were either awakened or came outside to check on the commotion, Dahl said.

The driver, who was the only person in the car, was taken by ambulance to a Santa Rosa hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
