Cyclist killed in hit-and-run crash near Guerneville

Law enforcement officers are searching for the driver, who abandoned the BMW in Rio Nido.|

A Berkeley cyclist was killed Sunday morning after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on Highway 116 just west of Guerneville.

The cyclist, a 59-year-old man, was stopped on the right shoulder looking at his phone, when the out-of-control westbound BMW careened into him about 8:45 a.m., a news release from the CHP said.

After striking the cyclist, the driver continued westbound for a distance before turning around and heading back toward Guerneville, the release said.

The Berkeley man was declared dead at the scene. His name was not released.

According to CHP logs, the car - described as being all black with blacked out windows and taillights - was found abandoned in Rio Nido.?A license plate was located at the scene of the crash, but the driver is still at large.
